A Breakthrough in the Fight Against Hepatitis B! Researchers have discovered that a protein called Netrin-1 can block the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) from infecting liver cells, potentially opening a new door for treatment.
Globally, over 250 million people are battling HBV, a virus that can lead to chronic liver disease and even liver cancer. Current treatments can only manage the virus, not eliminate it, creating a critical need for innovative solutions.
Netrin-1, a protein known for its roles in guiding nerve cells and regulating the immune system, has now been found to interfere with HBV's ability to enter liver cells.
How does it work? The research team found that Netrin-1 stops HBV in two ways:
- Blocking Attachment: Netrin-1 prevents the virus from sticking to liver cells.
- Preventing Internalization: It also stops the virus from entering the cells.
The researchers identified that Netrin-1 interacts with endothelial lipase (LIPG), a host factor that helps HBV attach to liver cells. By binding to LIPG, Netrin-1 disrupts the virus's ability to connect with the cells. Additionally, Netrin-1 interacts with the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), preventing the formation of a complex that the virus uses to enter cells.
Experiments using humanized mice showed that Netrin-1 effectively suppressed HBV infection in living organisms.
Professor Honda, the corresponding author, stated, “Our study reveals a previously unrecognized role of Netrin-1 in blocking hepatitis B virus entry into hepatocytes by interfering with both viral attachment and internalization. We hope this work will inspire further research into multifunctional host factors that can be leveraged to combat viral infections.”
But here's where it gets controversial... While these findings are promising, it's important to remember that this research is still in its early stages. More studies are needed to determine the long-term effects and safety of using Netrin-1 as a treatment.
