Get ready for a traffic nightmare, Auckland! The highly anticipated opening of IKEA's new store is just around the corner, and it's set to cause some serious congestion. But here's the catch: it might just be worth the hassle!
Transport authorities are predicting delays that will make your commute feel like an eternity. We're talking about queues lasting over 40 minutes at the motorway exit near Mt Wellington, where the store is located. And that's just the worst-case scenario! The surrounding streets are also expected to be gridlocked, with potential delays of up to 40 minutes on the Mt Wellington Highway during peak hours.
The opening of IKEA, a long-awaited Swedish furniture giant, is expected to draw massive crowds to Sylvia Park on December 4th. Auckland Transport and NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi are urging road users to plan ahead and allocate extra time for their journeys. Claire Howard, the manager of Auckland Transport Operations Centre, warns that the impact on the transport network will be significant, potentially affecting the entire city.
"Our traffic modelling shows that travel times will be substantially longer than usual. In the worst-case scenario, you could be waiting for over an hour to exit the motorway and find a parking spot at IKEA," Howard explained.
The congestion is expected to be at its peak during rush hour in the evenings on weekdays and between 1-4 pm on Saturdays, especially for those heading north from South Auckland. But here's where it gets controversial: is the hassle of sitting in traffic for hours really worth it for a shopping trip?
The Auckland Transport Operations Centre (ATOC) has been working closely with IKEA to minimize the impact on traffic. They plan to divert traffic signals and manage congestion as much as possible. Howard assures us that staff will be monitoring and responding 24/7 to keep traffic moving.
"We understand the excitement surrounding IKEA's opening, but it's important to remember that popular events and destinations can put a strain on our transport network. We're doing our best to manage the situation, but we need everyone's cooperation," Howard added.
Real-time updates will be available on various platforms, including the NZTA Journey Planner website, AT website, and mobile app notifications. Electronic signs on highways and local roads, as well as social media channels, will also provide the latest information.
For those traveling through Auckland, it's advisable to plan for potential delays, especially if you're driving through the area or planning to visit the store. Alternative routes, such as the Western Ring Route (State Highway 20, 18, and 16) through Māngere, Mt Roskill, and Massey, are recommended to avoid State Highway 1.
And this is the part most people miss: there's an easier, less stressful way to get to IKEA! Transport authorities suggest avoiding the queues by visiting outside peak traffic hours. If you're not planning to buy large furniture items, taking the Eastern Line train is highly recommended. It's a quick 19-minute ride from Waitematā Station to Sylvia Park Station, compared to over an hour by car, especially if you're just browsing or able to get your purchases delivered.
