A South African cricket legend has called out a rising star for his recent struggles, sparking a debate among fans.
Dewald Brevis, the talented batter from South Africa, is facing criticism for his poor form in the ongoing SA20 tournament. Representing the Pretoria Capitals, Brevis has failed to impress, scoring just 6 and 12 in his first two innings. This has led to a scathing assessment from none other than South African icon Herschelle Gibbs.
The Great South African Slam
Gibbs, a legendary figure in South African cricket, took to X to express his disappointment with Brevis' performance. He questioned the batter's game management skills, despite Brevis having played numerous T20 matches already.
"I'd love to know what the coaches are telling this young man. He's not showing any signs of strategic thinking, even with his experience," Gibbs wrote.
But here's where it gets controversial...
While Brevis' form has dipped, the Pretoria Capitals have also struggled, remaining winless after two matches. Their most recent game saw them face the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, who were powered to victory by a Quinton de Kock masterclass.
De Kock's blistering 77 off 47 balls, coupled with Matthew Breetzke's 52, set the stage for a dominant Sunrisers performance. The pair's electrifying partnership of 116 runs off just 70 balls laid the foundation for a formidable total of 188/6.
And this is the part most people miss...
The Sunrisers' victory was a team effort, with four players in contention for the Player of the Match award: Breetzke, de Kock, Shai Hope, and Adam Milne. De Kock, or 'QDK' as he's known, took the fan vote with an impressive 69.3% of the total.
But it was Milne who delivered the key breakthrough, dismissing Brevis for 12 off just five balls. This triggered a collapse in the Capitals' innings, with Milne running through the tail and Senuran Muthusamy cleaning up a well-set Will Smeed with a brilliant delivery.
The Sunrisers' pace trio of Marco Jansen, Milne, and Anrich Nortje proved too much for the Capitals, propelling the Sunrisers to the top of the SA20 table with 10 points.
So, what do you think? Is Brevis' poor form a cause for concern, or just a temporary slump? And how will the Pretoria Capitals turn their fortunes around? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
